TIM FERRIS' FOUR-HOUR WORK WEEK
"The 4-Hour Workweek: Escape 9-5, Live Anywhere, and Join the New Rich" by Timothy Ferriss
August 23, 2007: You Get Something Out of Everything Your Read . . ,
Michael Gallagher, west coast regional sales manager for CIMS insurance brokerage, and I were having lunch in Las Vegas at McCormick & Schmicks (infamous for that alleged Jim Gibbons-Chrissy Mazzeo tête-à-tête that almost cost Gibbons the Nevada Guv job). Our conversation focused on "good reads" to sharpen our skills in our ever-evolving professional lives.
My book recommendation for Mike was Timothy Ferriss' "The Four Hour Work Week". I stumbled on it browsing the Amazon best seller lists and it struck me as extremely appropriate in a time when web-based marketing is the "new black". (That's an obtuse analogy.) Tim's story of how he unchained himself from the traditional 40+ hour work week and fashioned a work-life-style that allowed him to travel the world intrigued me. I recommend it as a quick read, then go back and digest those areas that fit into your professional goals/dreams. Tim gives specifics on what he did, what vendors he used, and samples of others who are doing it. I suggested the book to a business associate in St. Louis and he called me back in a few days to say that he had recommended the book for his church "book club" and club members spent their next meeting brain storming new business marketing ideas.
If you are looking for "divine inspiration" then go to church. If you are looking for ideas to sharpen your competitiveness in the marketplace, open new avenues for residual income, or just are intrigued by Ferriss' story, then read the book. As Jim Rohn said to me and continues to tell his audiences, "you got to read the books". I gave my copy to my 18-year old son who is starting business school at UNLV. If you get just one good idea from each book you read, each person you meet, then you are a step closer to your goals/dreams.
